Plenty of Albany landscaping companies will happily take down a tree for you. Plenty of tree services will happily tidy the beds while they are on site. The line between the two trades is blurry from the outside, and most homeowners only discover where it sits when something goes wrong.
This is the practical difference: what each trade is equipped for, how each one prices the work, and the point at which hiring the cheaper option stops being a saving.
What a Landscaper Is Genuinely Good At
A good landscaper is the right call for anything at ground level and anything ornamental. Shaping shrubs, cutting back hedges, clearing brush, planting young trees, mulching beds, taking out a sapling or a small ornamental under about fifteen feet with clear space around it.
That work is well within a landscaping crew’s training and kit, and you will usually pay less for it than a tree company would charge, because it does not require climbing gear, rigging or a chipper.
Where the Work Crosses Into Arborist Territory
The moment a job involves height, weight over a target, or a diagnosis, it stops being landscaping.
- Anything that has to be climbed or lifted into. Once a crew is working off the ground, rope and saddle technique and rigging become the job rather than an accessory to it.
- Anything above a roof, a fence, a driveway or a service drop. These trees come down in sections on ropes. Felling is not an option, and the sectioning plan is what keeps the weight off your house.
- Anything where the question is “is this tree dying?” Emerald ash borer, oak wilt, root-plate movement and included bark are diagnostic calls. Getting them wrong means either removing a tree that had years left, or leaving one that did not.
- Anything storm-damaged. A partially fallen or hung-up tree holds stored tension that is not visible from the ground. This is the single most common way people are seriously hurt after a storm in the Capital Region.
- Anything needing a permit or a report. Insurers, municipalities and HOAs generally want an assessment from a credentialed arborist, not an opinion from a mowing crew.
How Each Trade Actually Prices the Job
This is where the confusion usually starts, because the two trades quote in different units.
Landscapers usually price by time. An hourly or half-day rate per crew member, sometimes with equipment on top. That suits open-ended work like clearing or bed maintenance, where nobody can say up front exactly how long it will take.
Tree services usually price by the job. A single written figure for the whole removal, because the variables, height, lean, access, what sits underneath, are assessed before the crew arrives. Neither model is better. But an hourly quote on a complex removal transfers all the risk of an overrun to you, while a fixed written price transfers it to the contractor. On anything involving rigging, ask for the fixed price.
The Difference That Actually Costs Money: Insurance
General landscaping liability cover often excludes work at height and tree felling. It is not that the landscaper is uninsured; it is that the policy may not extend to the specific task you have asked them to do.
If a limb goes through your roof or your neighbour’s fence and the policy does not cover the activity, the claim falls to you or your homeowner’s insurance. That single exposure dwarfs whatever you saved on the quote.
Ask any contractor, in either trade, for a certificate of insurance that names tree work specifically, plus workers’ compensation. Anyone doing this properly will send it without hesitation.
A Simple Way to Decide
- Both feet on the ground, nothing valuable underneath, no diagnosis needed, a landscaper is fine, and usually cheaper.
- Someone has to leave the ground, or something below could be damaged, hire the tree service.
- You are not sure whether the tree is safe, that uncertainty is itself the answer. Get it looked at.
