Trimming & Pruning in Charleston: what's different here.

Pruning work in Charleston is mostly live oak, laurel oak and water oak. Timing matters here because of laurel wilt. Has killed most redbay in the Lowcountry; spreads via redbay ambrosia beetle. December through February is best: trees are dormant, it is outside hurricane season, and live oaks and other hardwoods respond best to winter pruning. Street trees are a separate matter. Pruning grand or protected trees needs no permit but must follow industry pruning standards; street trees are maintained by the Urban Forestry Division.

Trees we see most in Charleston

  • Crape myrtle Ubiquitous ornamental; topping damage and powdery mildew are common issues
  • Pecan Old peninsula and Mount Pleasant pecans drop heavy limbs in storms
  • Sweetgum Volunteers everywhere; weak crotches and gumballs, exempt from grand-tree rules
  • Sabal palmetto State tree; trunk is sturdy but frond and boot cleanup is constant
  • Loblolly pine Tall coastal pine that snaps in hurricanes; exempt from grand-tree status
  • Water oak Common lowland oak; decay and limb drop are frequent removal reasons

Pests & disease to watch

  • Laurel wilt Has killed most redbay in the Lowcountry; spreads via redbay ambrosia beetle
  • Formosan subterranean termite Charleston is a hotspot; colonies hollow out live oaks and other trees
  • Southern pine beetle / Ips beetles Kill storm- and drought-stressed loblolly and slash pines
  • Palmetto weevil Attacks stressed and transplanted palms, especially Canary Island date palms
  • Hypoxylon canker and oak decline Finish off laurel and water oaks weakened by saltwater flooding and drought

Weather & timing

  • Hurricanes and tropical storms Hugo (1989), Matthew, Irma, Dorian, Ian and Debby all caused widespread tree damage
  • Saturated soils and king tides Waterlogged ground leads to root-plate failure of large oaks and pines
  • Severe thunderstorms and lightning Daily summer storms split pines and oaks
  • Occasional ice storms Rare but damaging, such as the February 2014 ice event

Best time: December through February is best: trees are dormant, it is outside hurricane season, and live oaks and other hardwoods respond best to winter pruning.

FAQ

Trimming & Pruning questions, answered.

Trimming & Pruning pricing in Charleston depends on size, access, and complexity, most local jobs land between $300 and $2,500. You always get a flat-rate written quote up front, with no hidden fees and no travel charges within the Charleston area.

Charleston's tree ordinance protects grand trees (24 in. DBH or larger, pines and sweetgums excluded) and protected trees (8 in. DBH or larger, except multi-stem crape myrtles). On single-family or duplex lots, trees under 24 in. DBH may be removed without a permit, but any grand tree requires a city tree-inspection request and permit, normally approved only if the tree is hazardous, diseased, irreparably injured, or damaging a habitable building (an ISA-certified arborist report may be required). Commercial lots, lots with three or more units, and residential lots of one acre or more must maintain 15 protected trees per acre and need a permit to drop below that; trees in the OCRM critical-line buffer cannot be removed. Pruning grand or protected trees needs no permit but must follow industry pruning standards; street trees are maintained by the Urban Forestry Division. We confirm what applies to your tree before work starts and handle the paperwork with City of Charleston Zoning Division whenever a permit is needed.

For most species, late winter to early spring is ideal, but safety and storm-damage pruning can be done any time in SC. We advise on timing.

Never more than ~25% in a season. Over-pruning stresses the tree; our arborists prune conservatively for long-term health.

Done right, no, proper cuts improve health and structure. Topping (indiscriminate cutting) harms trees, and we never do it.
